How To Stop Worrying And Start Trusting God
Have you ever felt like worry sneaks up on you when you least expect it? One moment, you’re trusting God completely, and the next, a small setback spirals into anxious thoughts. I know that feeling all too well.
Since coming back to God, I’ve seen improvement in my ability to trust Him, yet worry still tries to creep in. One day, I feel secure in my faith, and the next, I’m overanalyzing every detail—wondering if I’m doing enough, if I’ve made the right decisions, or what the future holds.
Jesus asks us a simple yet convicting question:
“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27)
That verse hit me hard. Worry is completely useless. It doesn’t change anything, but it does drain your energy, steal your peace, and pull you away from God’s truth.
I don’t say this to dismiss your struggles. Life can bring heavy burdens, and our concerns are very real. But worry itself never solves our problems. What does help is trusting God and taking intentional steps to break free from the cycle of anxiety.
Through Scripture, prayer, and practical habits, I’ve found ways to manage worry and experience more of God’s peace. I still have moments of anxiety, but these steps have helped me regain my focus and trust in Him. I pray they encourage you too.

Guard Your Heart and Mind
Worry often starts in our thoughts, so it’s crucial to guard what enters your mind. The Bible tells us:
“Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
That means being intentional about what you dwell on.
I’ve noticed that when I let my thoughts spiral especially when I’m alone a small concern can quickly turn into full-blown worry. That’s why it’s so important to catch those anxious thoughts early and bring them before God. Ask yourself: Is this thought aligned with God’s truth? Does it reflect His promises or my fears? If it doesn’t, cast it down and replace it with His Word.
Practical Steps:
- Pray immediately when a worry enters your mind, asking God to give you peace and help you trust Him.
- Memorize verses about peace and trust, like Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
- Limit what you consume whether it’s negative news, social media, or toxic conversations that stirs up unnecessary worry.

Meditate on God’s Word
Once we take control of our anxious thoughts, we need to replace them with something stronger—God’s truth. That’s where meditating on Scripture comes in.
At first, I found this hard. When something happened, my instinct was to dwell on the problem, not on God’s promises. But over time, when I put it in to practice I noticed it helped.
One of my favorite verses that helps is Joshua 1:9:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Meditating on this truth reminds me that no matter what happens, God is with me.
Practical Steps:
- Keep Scripture cards or notes with verses about peace and trust in places you’ll see them often your desk, mirror, your phone screen.
- Spend a few minutes each day reading and reflecting on scripture. Ask God to help you apply it to your life.
- When worry starts to creep in, pause and replace the anxious thought with a Scripture. For example, if you’re worried about the future, remind yourself of:
Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

Trust God with the Details
So much of worry comes from trying to control things that are out of our hands. But as I’ve learned, God is sovereign over every detail of our lives. Worrying doesn’t make things better, but trusting God does. He is faithful, and He cares deeply about the things that weigh on your heart.
Jesus reminds us:
Matthew 6:34: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
That doesn’t mean we ignore responsibilities or challenges, but it does mean releasing the things we can’t control into God’s hands.
Practical Steps:
- Write down your worries in a journal and pray over each one, asking God to take care of them.
- Remind yourself of God’s faithfulness in the past —how He’s come through for you before.
- Take things one day at a time. Trust God for today and leave tomorrow in His hands.
-
Surround Yourself with Encouragement
It’s hard to stop worrying when you’re constantly surrounded by negativity. Whether it’s people, media, or your own inner dialogue, the voices around you matter. Surround yourself with encouraging people who remind you of God’s goodness and seek out resources that strengthen your faith.
Practical Steps:
- Spend time with friends or mentors who uplift you and encourage your trust in God.
- Replace negative media consumption with worship music, Christian podcasts, or sermons.
- Join a Bible study or small group where you can share your struggles and grow in faith with others.
-
Pray and Surrender
Finally, take your worries to God in prayer. He invites us to lay everything before Him:
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
Practical Steps:
- Set aside time each day to pray specifically about the things you’re worried about.
- Practice surrendering your worries to God, literally saying, “Lord, I give this to You. I trust You with this situation.”
- Thank Him for the peace He promises to give, even before you see the outcome.
Conclusion: Choose Peace Over Worry
Worry may be a constant battle, but it doesn’t have to control your life. God offers us a better way a life filled with His peace and freedom.
If you’re struggling with worry today, I encourage you to take just one step whether it’s praying, memorizing Scripture, or surrendering your fears to God. His peace is available to you right now.
